Brunei’s 1st International Humanitarian Law: Moot Court and Mini Roleplay Competition

Bandar Seri Begawan. (11 September 2019)- Asian Law Students’ Association Brunei (ALSA Brunei) and Shari’ah & Law Students Society (Shalawsoc) organized a two days event from 9th to 10th September 2019 for the 1st International Humanitarian Law: Moot Court and Mini Roleplay Competition with the theme, “Even Wars Have Limit” in collaboration with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA). The winner of the competition will represent Brunei Darussalam in the Annual Regional Moot Court Competition which will be held in Hong Kong in March 2020.

The guest of honor was Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Rector of UNISSA.

Judges of the competition included legal practitioners in Brunei and representatives from ICRC. Legal practitioners in Brunei namely, Mr Roy Prabhakaran and Miss Nabilah Abidin of Yusof Halim & Partners, Puan Syarifah Sarinah binti Wan Ibrahim, ex-legal officer of Attorney General’s Chambers, Professor Nehaluddin Ahmad of UNISSA acted in the competition as judges. Meanwhile, Mr Zurab Burduli, the Deputy Head of Regional Delegation of ICRC Kuala Lumpur along with Miss Amirah Hamidon, Legal Advisor of ICRC and 2 ICRC Legal interns Kuhan Pillai and Akmal Faiq were also acted as judges for the competition.

A total of six groups comprising of 18 law students from UNISSA participated in the competition. Group 101 consisting of Arif Azhan bin Awang Besar, Amal Nabilah binti Haji Kasah and Adi Iskandar Safwan bin Zuliskandar emerged as Champion of the 1st International Humanitarian Law: Moot Court and Mini Roleplay Competition. 1st Runner Up was awarded to Group 103 consisting of Mohd Najihuddin bin Nooralizam, Ak Md Syair Amin bin Pg Shahril Annuar and Hadhirah A’yuni binti Haminuddin. Group 101 and Group 103 also secured the Best Memorial: Prosecution and Best Memorial: Defence respectively while, Ak Md Syair Amin bin Pg Shahril Annuar was awarded the Best Mooter of the competition.

Ultimately, the competition was held to enhance advocacy skills of law students in Brunei and to expose law students in Brunei to different legal fields.
