INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ISLAMIC FINANCE 2010 (ICiF 2010) "Contemporary challenges of Islamic finance: towards realizing the goals of shari'ah"
Organized By: Faculty of Business and Management Sciences (FBMS)
IntroductionIslamic Banking and Finance, as an industry, has witnessed rapid growth in the last two decades. Currently, there are over 270 Islamic banks worldwide and a total market capitalization in excess of US$13 billion. Cursory examination of the Islamic Financial services industry indicates overdependence on fixed-return instruments such as murabahah and ijarah, and lack of profit-sharing, modes of financing, such as mudarabah and musharakah. In addition, some of the financial products and practices that have received Shari'ah-compliant endorsement are being questioned by academic scholars and the public.
